pierre plans to speak today. we could see fireworks here on capitol hill when senator dianne feinstein gets her question to question him at today's hearing. she has been an outspoken critic of the nra. tuesday she told reporters they have fought virtually every kind of regulation. the time has come to change course and the time has come to make people safe. la pierre says congress shouldn't pass any new laws till the government starts enforcing the laws already on the books. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. >> it is unclear if gabriel giffords will attend today's hearing but connecticut center richard bloomenthal says there will indeed be a surprise guest. he's just not saying who that is going to be. could there be a compromise coming on the controversial pit bull laws in maryland. montgomery county delegate luis simmons hopes to introduce a bill that will achieve that. last year pit bulls were ruled

inherently dangerous. a new display at washington crime museum takes a close look at dog fighting. the exhibit called dog fighting: the voiceless victims is sponsored by the uspca. it features items used by dog fighters. there's a skull of a pit bull that was removed from a grave site during a dog fight investigation. stern words from president obama to congress regarding immigration reform. during a trip to his lass having high school, president obama praised the reform plan drawn up by a bipartisan group of eight senators. he says if the plan gets bogged down in congress, he will send lawmakers his own immigration bill. >> we need congress to act on a comprehensive approach that finally deals with the 11 million undocumented immigrants

welcome back. it's 4:38. we're looking at a mild start with temperatures which will be climbing rather nicely. kind of like yesterday. mid-60s to 7 oz. -- 7 oz owe 70s. we have a chance of some strong thunderstorms. we'll talk about that in about five minutes. right now movie to monika with timesaver traffic. a serious and tough situation in the landover area. you're looking at a live picture right now of an accident that happened before 3:00 this morning. inner loop of the beltway, southbound 495 after route 50 involving a fire truck, a tractor-trailer, and another vehicle. four firefighters have been injured in this accident. two are in serious condition. this will be there for a while. one lane gets you by right now in each direction. i'll have more details on how to get around this in my next report. back to you. scary story out of alabama. an alabama school bus driver is dead and a child is still right

now a hostage as police wait out a lengthy standoff that started yesterday but it's still going on as we speak. midland city, alabama is where this is. police are with a 65-year-old suspect. the f.b.i. has also been called in to help. according to witnesses the suspect was upset because the child -- excuse me, the driver would not let the child off the bus. the suspect told the other kids to get off the bus, shot the driver four times according to police. he grabbed the child and then ran into a nearby bunker. schools in the area have been canceled for today. we're continuing to follow the story. we'll bring you more information as soon as we get it. time right now is 4:40. the dow is within striking distance of 14,000 for the first time since october 2007. and the latest rally thanks to another wave of strong profit reports. the dow stands this morning at 13,954. it gained more than 72 points in trading yesterday. nasdaq was down on the day,

very fractionally down, about half a point. the s&p 500 was up by more than 7. investors are also keeping an eye on what the federal reserve may do today as central bankers wrap up a two-day policy meeting here in d.c. the fed is expected to renew its exitment to buying bond -- commitment to buying bonds to keep interest rates low and spark the economy. the blackberry 10 has a faster browser, a new touch screen and the ability to keep corporate and personal data separate. rim hopes the feature will help set it apart in the smartphone market. and a new report ranks d.c. as the second fastest growing city for people who are looking for a job. that's according to the website nerdwallet.com in case you're wondering. the study took into account population growth, income, unemployment, and the cost of living in 26 u.s. cities. houston came in sixth place. denver was fourth. san francisco came in third.

humidity is up. the temperatures are up as well. buffalo 51 degrees. something is up. here's the next batch of arctic air. this storm here is producing snow, heavy snows coming through kansas city and des moines. but on the warm side, look at all of these tornado watch boxes we have for this line of severe weather that's coming through the deep south, the tennessee valley. that's what we're going to be looking at as we head into the afternoon and evening hours. in fact the entire area, this yellow is from the storm prediction center. a slight risk of severe weather. it gets light, moderate and high risk levels. damaging wind gusts will be the main threat with the line of showers and storms that's expected to come through here late this afternoon. we're okay through lunch time. we'll head toward 4:00. probably okay in the metro. but look at the shenandoah valley toward western maryland. we head into the nighttime hours. it line of showers and storms will come through. by tomorrow morning here returns the cold weather.

today 70. late storms. might even be holding off till after dark for most of you. 47 tonight. we don't really see temps move tomorrow, 48. windy and colder. a.m. flurries are snow showers friday. look at the highs, only 33. we stay in the 30s on groundhog day and sunday back to 44 monday. monika samtani, how is it looking? i-95 in prince george's county. not much has changed since the last time around. if you are traveling or planning to on the beltway in prince george's county, you might want to think twice. that's because before 3:00 this morning, we had a very serious and terrible accident occur on the inner loop of the beltway. that's southbound 495 right here, south of route 50 in the new carrollton-landover area. let's take a look from our live shot right now. if you are planning to head there, look at that. it was a fire truck, a tractor- trailer, and a jeep involved in the accident. four firefighters injured. two are in very serious condition. seven people in total transported to the hospital. so as you can see, this is

going to be here for a while, not only with the cleanup but also with the investigation. let's take a little different shot and give you a different perspective. the beltway here, one lane gets by in each direction. you can access the beltway from route 50 itself. i would suggest you go ahead on the inner loop and use 450 to 202 and avoid it all together. give them the space they will need this morning through the rush hour to deal with the situation. i'll keep you posted. back you to, mike and jess. marijuana and prescription drug abuse continues to abgrowing problem among teenagers. this is according to a survey. some experts say feens are starting -- teens are starting to get mixed messages from celebrities and the legallallization of marijuana in many states. joining me is the director of the national institute on drug abuse. this is very glamorous these days, drugs and prescription drugs. how can we get some information out there to give teens about the real risks, doctor? >> i think what happens, is

drugs always -- it basically shows people being zairing and rebellious -- daring and rebellious but the reality is what drugs do to your brain which is particularly harmful to an adolescent. now we're addressing the concept of marijuana legallallization, what we are putting forward is the concept that marijuana may have purposes that is interpreted by some that it's not a dangerous drug. >> with depictions in the movies, commercials, you see them in print advertising, these are very glossy glamorizations of this kind of use. how do you combat it? >> i was smiling because it was exactly the same story with cigarette smoking. it was extraordinarily glamorous. you can see the movies of the '50s and '60s and very attractive people smoking. and yet the evidence and the recognition that there were harmful consequences that

changed. so that is the strategy to combat the glamorization of drugs is by providing objective evidence that can make individuals look at it and say is it worth it, is it worth it for looking glamorous for a couple of minutes. >> for parents and teenagers who would like to get more information about the real facts about drug use and drug abuse, where can they find that? >> drugabuse.gov. we'll also be doing the national drug facts week. it's an opportunity to host events and to actually have a chat with scientists for young people to ask questions regarding the effects of drugs. we have evidence based on scientific studies as opposed to personal experiences. >> thanks so much for joining us. we appreciate your time this morning. take care. i'm sure you've heard about this. super bowl sunday. and it's super bowl week in the city of new orleans. ravens versus 49ers on sunday. you can watch the game right
